Run for the Sun (week 1)

Portsmouth, VA to Ocracoke Island, NC

After a nice month home, it’s time to head South. Kristin put her gardens to bed for the winter. I pulled out the ski boat (it’s up at Fairlee Marine), the Waverunner (in the storage unit), the Whaler and finally mom and dad’s pontoon boat (both at Gray’s Marine). Good to document this here so I remember in the spring. We loaded up the gear and headed for the airport on Saturday, October 17. The Cape Air flight to Boston was delayed by an hour, but turned out ok because the Boston to Charlotte flight was also delayed. The delays meant we missed our flight from Charlotte to Norfolk. Fortunately there was another flight to catch two hours later. As had been expected, the final flight was also delayed. After 13 hours of travel (just a little bit longer than it would have taken to drive), we arrived in Portsmouth, VA. We stayed put Sunday to stock the boat, get a coat of varnish on the rails that I had previously stripped, and to watch football. Good at to be back onboard!

We left the house with the first snow of the season. Not much, but a good sign that we are leaving the November tundra season at the right time.
There is the last bag (my new cordless Dewalt buffer) being loaded onto the plane for our last leg. Looks like our luggage will all make it, even with all the delayed flights. Wax-on.
After another stay in Coinjock, and the required prime rib dinner, now getting into the Pamlico Sound and the Outer Banks enroute to Hatteras, NC.
Lots of fishing boats.
Coming into Hatteras around Clam Shoal, Log Shoal and Egg Shoal, east of Legged Lump.
Birds settled on a marker on our way to Ocracoke Island.
Little cat shaped sandbar coming into Ocracoke. Must be Jazz watching over us.
There was a Coast Guard plane patrolling the Pamlico Sound overhead during much of our trip from Hatteras to Ocracoke yesterday. I’m guessing this is the reason why…
