Arrived at the South Mills Lock, found a “hole” with 10 feet of water and sat, waiting for the 11:00 opening.
Crossing the NC/VA border in some shallow water. Our boat drafts just over 4 feet. The depth sounder reads about 3-4 feet shallow (although it did read 0.0 when we hit the sandbar back in North Carolina). I started counting each “bump” when we hit a log or stump. 24 impacts during the trip between the locks. The Southern end is worse than the top. I cringed at every thud, but no damage to the running gear…. we’ll see what I find when I pull it out to get the bottom painted later this summer! 2000 boats pass through the Great Dismal Swamp Canal each year.
